Who Has The Keys To Your Kingdom?

Cyber Security is a key aspect we need to look at in today’s connected world, from our children finding entertainment on YouTube to major businesses transferring billions over the internet. Often overlooked is who has access to what?

An IT Department / IT Company is often trusted with secure passwords to access all their systems, this is fine but you should have checks in place to make sure a single employee doesn’t control access. Such as in a case in the USA, a college fired an employee and the password was then held to ransom for $200,000.

We provide some guidelines to follow below.

Make Sure No Personal Addresses Are Used As A Recovery Option

Computer slow? Maybe time for an SSD

When we talk about a slow computer the main cause is often due to the machine being fitted with a mechanical drive, we call this a harddrive (HDD). A typical HDD is often 7200 RPM but some machines are fitted with 5400 RPM drives, it is these drives that begin to slow down over time.

What is a HDD?

With a HDD that is a mechanical drive is a magnetic platter that spins while it is either read from or written too. Parts from a mechanical drive begin to slow and degrade over time, with wear and tear on parts you may boot up one day to find either the drive has failed or begins to present issues. Once issues occur then you are on the way to complete failure.

Fragmentation [...]

Is Your Cyber security Up To Scratch?

When I was growing up the Internet wasn’t public domain, over time the Internet has become “real life” rather than just something that the rich or geeks would use. During the 90’s and even the early 2000’s security wasn’t something that most people were familiar with, it was a very naive world.

IT businesses have matured since then and the Internet has grown to be way of life. Our businesses and homes have multiple devices and regardless of there location they need to be secured. Cyber Security is not just a buzz word, our digital lives need protection just like our physical lives.

What can we do to protect ourselves? Encrypt your [...]

Adjust Sleep Settings On A Mac

There are three main types of sleep modes for Apple desktops and portables. The three modes are Sleep, Hibernation, and Safe Sleep. There are different reasons that you may wish to use the available settings, let’s go through the options below and help you to adjust the sleep settings on a Mac.

Sleep

Sleep mode is used by most Mac desktops, it essentially means that the components in the Mac are put to sleep but the RAM remains active. This enables the Mac to quickly wake from slumber and allow you to keep on working.

Hibernation

The use of hibernation was very popular in the early days of Windows and the feature has been built into the Mac as well. The contents [...]

Windows 7 Is Coming To An End

Windows 7 support is ending, come January 14th 2020 Microsoft are pulling the plug

All things come to an end. Before Microsoft ends support we recommend you take action to avoid any problems in the future.

What does this mean to me?

If you are running a business or using a computer in your home then having supported software becomes very important. Once Microsoft ends support for Windows 7, then they will no longer fix any bugs. There won’t be any future security fixes. This puts your identity and security at risk. Not only this but you will no longer be compliant and working with credit cards means you will be failing PCI Compliance.

Losing A Company Device Puts Your Business At Risk

Why losing a company device puts your business at risk

The thought of losing a company mobile or leaving a laptop behind is something everyone dreads, did you know that losing a company device puts your business at risk? The cost of replacing the old device is only a fraction of things to bear in mind.

Consider the information stored on the device, the value of which could be double the cost of the device, multiple or more. The loss can put your private data at risk as with a Smartphone loss the likelihood is that you were signed in to all social media accounts and mailboxes. Unless you had appropriate security then this information is all at risk no way of knowing how much [...]

Don’t Let Your Passwords Be Held To Ransom

A story I saw online recently was a shock but not unexpected, a former employee was holding a ransom on company data. Don’t let your passwords be held to ransom

On reading a recent article it showed a recent fired IT worker attempted to hold a Google account to a $200,000 ransom. The worker had being fired and decided to change the Google password to an account controlled by a college locking them out and all the students being able to access the data. Don’t let your passwords be held to ransom.

Google originally refused to hand over the password as it was in the name of the former employee and not the company. Google finally handed over the password after a news [...]

Tech Support Scams And Payment Cards

Tech Support Scammers & now request payment in vouchers?

People fall for Tech support scammers all too often, they usually pray on the elderly or vulnerable that will be naive compared to many other people. The calls play out in a similar manner, you will receive a call from someone saying they are from a reputable company such as Microsoft and state you have a virus. They will convince you to allow them to remote onto your machine so they can show you all the viruses on your machine, unfortunately this is a scam.

They will login remotely and run Event Viewer to show you:

This screen shows a lot of errors but these occur naturally in your machine and they [...]

Is Free Wi-Fi Good or bad?

Public places often provide free Wi-Fi and with data restrictions on carriers it is all too easy to use but is free wi-fi good or bad?

You may know of an old saying, stating that there is no such thing as free. Although free Wi-Fi doesn’t charge our clients often ask is free wi-fi good or bad? We want to give you the information so you feel more educated and to keep you safe.

We see instances of e-mails being hacked, ransomware corrupting drives requesting payment and often when we drill down to what the customer was connecting to it is often a result of connecting to free wifi.
